On Friday, May 1, McPherson will commemorate the rule of law in the American system of government with public screenings of a video “The Rule of Law: If you can keep it.”
The video, which was filmed in McPherson, will premiere at the McPherson Museum (1111 E. Kansas Avenue). Two showings will take place at 12:00 noon and 5:30pm in the Museum’s Gathering Room. The events are free and open to the public.
The 15-minute video is directed by Oliver Bowman, a junior at McPherson High School, and features local citizens whose work supports and strengthens the rule of law: teachers, a journalist, a librarian, an attorney, a police officer, and an election supervisor.
Adele Bonney, a McPherson resident working with Bowman, said she knows of no other community creating this ambitious a project for Law Day. “The interviews in this video capture the commitment to the rule of law on a local level, “she said. “It brings an abstract idea alive in personal terms, reminding us how this historical principle influences our lives.”
May 1 was officially proclaimed Law Day in McPherson by McPherson Mayor James Loving, and Kansas Governor Laura Kelly will proclaim it statewide in a signing ceremony on April 30.
