MANHATTAN – With the team title already wrapped up on Tuesday, the attention turned to Hutchinson Community College freshman golfer Hugo Duquaine and his quest for the individual regional championship.
Duquaine completed a wire-to-wire run to the Region 6 individual crown, but needed a late flurry to steal the deal.
The No. 6-ranked Blue Dragons needed to late rush, rolling to a 28-stroke victory over Garden City to capture the program’s third-straight regional championship and the 24th Region 6 team title in program history.
The Blue Dragons shot a tournament-low 294 on Tuesday at Colbert Hills Country Club to shoot a 54-hole total of 894. Garden City was second at 922 after a final-round 300 on Tuesday. Dodge City was third at 947 after a team round of 312 on Tuesday.
Hutchinson won its 12th Region 6 Tournament under head coach Chris Young.
As for Duquaine, he opened the final round with a four-stroke lead, which completely disappeared heading to the 16th hole. From that point, Duquaine birdied the 16th hole, chipped in for birdie on the 17th hole and parred 18 to complete a three-stroke victory over Garden City’s Ilan Dufrenoy.
Duquaine shot a 1-over 73 in the final round and shot a 54-hole total of 218. He is the second-straight Blue Dragon to win the Region 6 individual championship, joining Charlie Box last season. Duquaine is the 13th Blue Dragon to win the Region 6 individual championship.
Four Blue Dragons finished in the Top 5 and earned first-team All-Region 6 honors.
Jayhawk Conference individual champion Jack Northgraves tied for third in the Region 6 championship at 225. He shot a 76 to close the championship on Tuesday.
Sophomore Corey Scullion and freshman Grant Hatzenbuehler tied for fifth at 227. Hatzenbuehler shot the low Blue Dragon round on Tuesday with an even-par 72. Scullion carded a 73 in the final round.
