The Sterling High School boys golf team placed second at the Sterling Black Bear Invitational Monday.
Ellinwood won the team title with a 336 score, followed by Cheney 341 and Sterling 350. Halstead placed fourth at 367, followed by Hillsboro 381, Nickerson 383, Lyons 403 and St. John-Hudson 413.
Inman and Berean Academy did not have enough players for a team score.
Sterling’s Wyatt Newberry placed second with a 78, four strokes behind first-place medalist Kooper Williams of Cheney, who fired a 74.
Sterling’s Cameron Morris placed fourth with an 80. Morris was in a three-way tie for third place at the end of regulation. The tie was broken on the course’s hardest hole.
Also posting 80s were Berean Academy’s Luke Friesen and Ellinwood’s Remi Thomas. Friesen placed third and Thomas fifth.
Sterling’s Lane Weigel placed ninth with an 84. Teammates Billy Higgins placed 40th with an 107 and Ian Dillard was 42d with a 111 score.
Halstead was led by Lance Anderson, who placed eighth with an 84. Maxx Linton placed 16th, 91; Aaron Learn, 24th, 95; Harrison Wilson, 29th, 97; Brock Odendahl, 33rd, 100.
Nickerson’s Lane Hoskinson placed 11th with an 84, followed by Kyler Nikkel, 14th, 89; Trey Jones, 35th, 100; Gage Hopkinson, 37th, 103; Shamus Nikkel, 38th, 105; and Brayden Mathis, 44th, 117.
Lyons’ top golfer Noah Geeves placed 15th with a 91, followed by Derek Valerio, 25th, 95; Elijah Lyon, 28th, 96; and Alex Landeros, 48th, 121.
Inman’s Creighton Friesen placed 22nd with a 94, followed by Braden Stutzman, 31st, 99; and Wyatt Jonas, 47th, 120.
