Warriors battle against Coyotes, win 4-3

SALINA, Kan. – Warrior tennis battled against the Coyotes in a rescheduled match that took place on Thursday, April 16. Sterling came away with the 4-3 win over Kansas Wesleyan in what proved to be an intense match up.

Sterling started strong by winning the doubles point. In No. 1 doubles play, Fernando Vargas and Kazuki Fukushima defeated Adam Hanson and Paul Jittawait in a 7-6 battle. No. 2 doubles proved to be just as tight as Rubem Bogomoltz and Adam King beat Gavin Chavez and Benjamin Cechak, 7-6, to secure the double point. Pedro Felipoff and Ibrahim Curtis-Kaduma lost to Jacob Phelps and Jack Hanson 6-1 in No. 3 doubles play.

Singles play continued to be a battle for the Warriors. Vargas got things started off strong with a win over Jittawait in the No. 2 singles match. He lost the first set 6-4 before winning the second set 6-3 and the tie breaker set 6-4. In No. 3 singles play, Fukushima found himself in a tight match against A. Hanson coming away with a 6-4, 7-6 win. Bogomoltz secured the win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Chavez in the No. 5 singles match.

In the No. 1 singles match, Pedro was in a tight match against Alex Sherer, losing the first set 6-3 before winning set two 6-4 but losing the tiebreaker set 6-4. King was in a similar battle in the No. 3 singles match against Phelps. King lost the first set 6-4 before winning the second set 7-6 and retiring in the tiebreaker match due to injury while leading 3-1. Cassidy Kelly finished out the day in the No. 6 singles match where he faced Jack Hanson and lost 6-1, 6-0.

Sterling (5-12, 2-7) will finish out the regular season against Evangel University (5-10, 3-3) on Senior Day in Sterling, Kan. on Saturday, April 18. The Warriors will start play after the conclusion of the women’s matches set to begin at 11 a.m.
