SPC – Moderate Severe Storm Risk For Part of SE Kansas

SHARE NOW

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the severe weather risk for a portion of southeast Kansas from enhanced (level 3) to moderate (level 4) for this afternoon evening. This upgrade covers the area roughly from Fort Scott through Chanute to Fredonia.

As of 1:25 PM storms were beginning to develop in south central Kansas, to the north and west of Wichita. These storms are forming along a cold front that has much drier air behind it. These storms will continue to develop along the line through the afternoon into this evening.

The main threat from these storms as of now is very strong winds, especially for areas to the north and west of Iola, along with damaging hail. While the tornado risk is low at this point, it cannot be completely ruled out.
