MAIZE, Kan. – McPherson High School Softball took part in the Maize Triangular on Tuesday, April 14, knocking off 6A contender Maize 11-8 after run-ruling Liberal 15-0. McPherson pitcher Carmin Pavlovich set a new milestone as well, recording her 100th strikeout.

Pera Bauer’s 3-4 mark highlighted one of three Bullpups who had multi-hit performances, with McPherson striking first with five runs in the first inning. The team then put up nine runs in the 3rd, before closing it out in the 4th with a run, winning 15-0 via the run rule.

Pavlovich and Kynedi Huggard had two hits apiece as well. Huggard and Everlee Buchman had two RBI’s. Ashlyn Schroeder recorded the win in the circle, not allowing a hit or a run in three innings. Annalis Gross closed it out in the fourth inning.

The Bullpups then took on Maize, who entered the game 12-1 on the year and is seen as a 6A State contender; however, McPherson used clutch hitting to defeat Maize 11-8. McPherson had 10 hits, led by Brooke Doile’s 3-4 mark with 4 RBI’s.

McPherson and Maize went back and forth, each scoring two runs in the first inning. McPherson then extended their lead, thanks to a six-run third inning, to lead 8-2. However, Maize then scored six unanswered to tie the game.

The Bullpups took the lead in the fifth inning, when Gross hit a sacrifice bunt, and a defensive error by Maize scored Huggard to make the score 9-8. After a scoreless 6th, McPherson got some insurance in the 7th on a two-out, two-run single by Doile. Carmin Pavlovich slammed the door in the seventh inning to win the game.

Pavlovich had two strikeouts in seven innings, eclipsing a milestone of 100 strikeouts in her high school career. She gave up eight runs (three of them earned) on nine hits.

McPherson improves to 10-4 on the season. They will resume AVCTL-3 play on Friday, April 17 at home against Mulvane.
