STERLING, Kan. – The Warriors got their first sweep of the season to start the week on Monday, April 13 with a 7-0 victory over Southwestern College. The day was highlighted by Cassidy Kelly getting his first collegiate win at the No. 6 singles spot to complete the sweep.
Sterling started by securing the double point. Fernando Vargas and Kazuki Fukushima dominated in No. 1 doubles play, defeating Drake Low and Jackson Davis, 6-0. No. 2 doubles looked much the same as Rubem Bogomoltz and Adam King took down Victor Arias and Connor Stampley, 6-1. Cassidy Kelly and Ibrahim Curtis-Kaduma battled in No. 3 doubles play against Fancesso Rochelli and Tyron Spears but the duo couldn’t pull off the upset and lost 7-6.
The Warriors didn’t let the loss phase them and got to work in singles play. Pedro Felipoff had a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Arias in No. 1 singles. Vargas and King both took down their opponents 6-1, 6-1 with Vargas defeating Lowe in No. 2 singles and King beating Davis in No. 3 singles.
In No. 4 singles play, Fukushima took care of business with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Stampley which Bogomoltz followed up with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rocchelli. Kelly put the cherry on top with his first victory in the No. 6 match, defeating Spears 6-2, 6-3.
Sterling will look to take this momentum into their next match as they travel to Salina, Kan. to take on Kansas Wesleyan on Thursday, April 16 with matches to start after the women’s play at 3 p.m.
