City, County, and School Board meetings will be taking place Monday and Tuesday, along with the Allen Community College Board of Trustees meeting.
City meetings
The Iola City Council Monday evening will, along with a request to remove a property from the demolition list, consider award of bids for sanitary sewer liming and purchase of a water distribution dump truck. Other agenda items during the 6 PM meeting at the Riverside Park Community building include requests from the Allen County Grow Council, Iola Theatre Association, and the Iola Municipal Band along with one connected with Iola High School prom. The council will also have a roundtable discussion on temporary vendor permits and an executive session is planned to discuss property acquisition.
Monday night’s Humboldt City Council meeting at 7 at City Hall will include selection of the Council president and various mayoral appointments, a request to submit applications for Public Water and Sewer Extension permits for the Walnut Creek Housing Development, and a discussion on the potential for solar power at City Hall and the Water and Sewer Plants. Other agenda items include a request to park a food truck on Bridge Street April 25th, a pay request for a water distribution project, and a request to place a shipping container near the dog pound along with presentation of a proclamation for Child Abuse Awareness Month.
Chanute City Commissioners Monday evening at 6:30 in the Commission Room at Memorial Hall will consider a resolution authorizing sale of bonds for a Wastewater Plant Project. This will be the first of three separate bond issuances over the next three years, done this way so they can be “bank qualified” and through that obtain lower interest rates. Commissioners will also consider a recommendation to demolish the Katy Ball Field and Stadium, which is no longer being used as Chanute Recreation has moved all of their teams to the Santa Fe Park fields. Other agenda items include requests to close parking spaces for the Main Street Chanute Farmers Market and for Allen Avenue from Main to Elm for Chanute Early Learning Center’s “Touch a Truck” event Tuesday evening, along with a request for use of Kary Park for the Mirza SEKCATS Car Show June 13th and several nuisance resolutions.
Garnett City Commissioners Tuesday evening at 6 at City Hall will consider an ordinance regulating use of storage containers, along with event requests for Southland Cruisers and Friends of the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail, a transient guest tax application, agreements for the 2026 Anderson County Corn Festival, and a special use permit request. Commissioners will also be hearing electric system and parks and recreation updates, discuss roof repair and/or replacement for several city facilities and various other items.
School meetings
The Iola USD 257 Board of Education Monday evening will consider renewal of its membership in Schools for Fair Funding, a group fo primarily rural school districts in Kansas that advocates in the interests of these districts. At the 6 PM meeting in the District Office Conference Room the board will also consider a maintenance project proposal and set negotiation dates. Executive sessions are also scheduled to discuss non-elected personnel and real property with a provision for possible action out of each session.
The Humboldt USD 258 Board of Education at 7 Monday evening at the Board office will hear a presentation on a High School Needs Assessment. The board will consider an activity bus purchase and RFP approvals, and as part of their consent agenda will consider an updating of daycare fees, approval of a 3rd kindergarten position for the 2026-27 school year, a rental contract with Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, a compass learning Summer program for the Middle School, and rescind an earlier approval for elementary computer purchases.
The Marmaton Valley USD 256 Board of Education Monday evening at 7 at the district office in Moran will consider grade level capacity matters and student handbooks for the coming year. The board will, in addition to routine reports and updates, have two meetings including one with members of the Prairie ‘Rose 4-H Club, consider hirings of summer help, approve fall coaching positions, review potential FACS candidates, and go through negotiation training.
County meeting
After not meeting last week, Allen County Commissioners have a lengthy agenda for Tuesday morning’s meeting at 8:30 at the Courthouse. Commissioners have two appointments with Economic Development Director Camille Lavon, on one of which she will be joined by Iola Area Chamber of Commerce Director Kelly Sigg. Commissioners will also hear an annual report from Dimity Lowell from Iola Seniors, meet with Aimee Daniels from the Allen County Multi-Agency Team, hear the weekly Road and Public Works updates, meet with County Treasurer Crickett Maley, and hear about a tax issue.
ACC Trustees
Allen Community College Trustees this evening will be discussing a proposal for a new Fine and Performing Arts Center on the Allen Campus along with renovations to the Lecture Hall that had earlier been brought up by the Faculty Senate. During the 6 PM meeting in the Ambler Board Room Trustees will also hear enrollment management, fleet management and tagline presentations, consider a number of police approvals, and discuss a board retreat.
