LIBERAL – Gabby Stauffer hammered out six hits, Riley Dreher had a five-RBI game while pitchers Aubree Thomas and Alyssa Rogers twirled complete games as the Hutchinson Community College softball team completed a regular-season sweep of the Seward County Saints on Wednesday.
The Blue Dragons defeated the Saints in 5-1 in Game 1 and then run-ruled Seward County 12-0 in five innings in the nightcap. The Dragons went 4-0 against Seward County this season and have won 17-consecutive games over the Saints.
Hutchinson is now 27-11 overall and remained in first place in the Jayhawk Conference at 16-4. The Blue Dragons play host to the Barton Cougars at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday for their annual Cancer Awareness Day. Seward County is now 13-25 overall and 5-15 in the KJCCC
GAME 1 RECAP – Hutchinson 5, Seward County 1
The Blue Dragons out-hit Seward County 11-5 in the first half, getting a combined six hits from their Nos. 7, 8 and 9 batters in the lineup.
Leading the way was Stauffer, who was 3 for 4 with an RBI from the clean-up spot.
Emery Benson-Hladik was 3 for 4 with two doubles. No. 9 hitter Kaibryn Kruger was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
Thomas (9-1) pitched her eighth complete game of the season and earned her 22nd career victory – Thomas moves past Kourtney Klein (2007-08) for seventh on the Blue Dragon career pitching wins list. Thomas allowed five hits and one unearned run while striking out six and walking one.
Stauffer’s RBI single and Leyla O’Connor‘s run-producing fielder’s choice gave the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead after one inning. Dreher’s RBI single in the second inning scored Kruger for a 3-0 lead.
Kruger had a sacrifice fly in the fourth to score pinch-running Lia Martinez and had an RBI single to score pinch-runner Desiray Segura in the sixth inning to up the Dragon lead to 5-0.
GAME 2 RECAP – Hutchinson 12, Seward County 0, 5 innings
Dreher tied a Blue Dragon single-game record with two triples in Hutchinson’s Game 2 victory. The last Blue Dragons with two triples was Bailey Backhaus against Colby on April 16, 2025 and she is the sixth player to share Hutchinson’s single-game record for triples.
Dreher had a two-run triple in the Blue Dragons’ two-run second inning. She added a three-run triple in the Blue Dragons’ five-run third inning. The Blue Dragon freshman shortstop went 3 for 3 with two triples, a double and a career-high five RBIs to lead the Blue Dragons.
Now with six triples this season, Dreher is tied for third on the Blue Dragon single-season triples list and she is in a four-way tie for seventh on the career triples list.
Riley has 71 hits for the season, which ties her for 10th on the Blue Dragon single-season hits list with Madison Grimes (2023) and Tailor Golly (2025). Her 21 doubles this season place her in a five-way tie for second on the Blue Dragon single-season doubles list.
Stauffer had her third-straight three-hit game, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Hadley Topping was 2 for 2 with one run scored.
Leyla O’Connor hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Macy Stephenson hit a solo homer in the fifth.
Rogers (6-3) tossed her first career complete-game shutout. She gave up a season-low three hits and struck out six and walked four. Only one Saint batter reached third base.
