The Hutchinson High School girls soccer team rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit (3-1 early in the second half) to defeat Dodge City 4-3 Saturday at the Klaus Kollmai Wichita South Titan Classic.
Then the Salthawks scored three straight goals in the second half for the comeback win and a second-place finish in the Blue Group. The game was played on the West soccer field at Wichita South.
Hutchinson freshman Laney Raigoza opened the scoring early in the first half on an assist from senior captain Rhyan Galyon, who was celebrating her birthday on Saturday.
Dodge City (0-3 in the tournament and 0-4 for the season) scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead at half and scored again at the start of the second half to stretch its lead to 3-1.
Galyon scored on an unassisted goal to cut Hutchinson’s deficit to 3-2. Salthawk freshman Brynn Lawrence scored her first goal of the year on an assist from Raigoza to tie the game at 3-3.
Galyon knocked home the game-winner with just 2 minutes left in the matchup on an assist from senior Karina Pineda.
The Salthawks posted a 3-0 record at the Titan Classic for the third straight year. Hutchinson defeated Wichita East 5-3 last Monday and Wichita East 2-1 on Wednesday.
Hutchinson (3-1-1) now has won three straight games after starting the season with one loss and one tie.
“The girls stuck together today when it would have been easy to just give up,” said Hutchinson assistant girls coach Cidy Vargas (also the head boys coach). “They battled for one another and really controlled the second half.
“It was really good to see this early in the season. After a slow start our first week of the season, we are really starting to play well as a unit. We are excited for what this season looks like moving forward.”
