PUEBLO, Colorado – Sophomore Corey Scullion‘s strong first round kick started the No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team after a slow start on Monday at the Sam Proal at the Pueblo Country Club.
The Blue Dragons shot rounds of 290 and 288 to finish Day 1 at 11-over 578. The Dragons trail team leader Colorado Christian by 17 strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round.
The Blue Dragons started Monday’s opening round with 11 combined bogeys over their first four holes. Scullion and freshman Hugo Duquaine started the turnround. Scullion had five birdies over the final 13 holes and Duquaine played his final 14 holes in 2-under par.
The Dragons jumped from 18th early in Round 1 to a tie for fifth at the round’s completion. The Dragons maintained their fifth-place position with a 4-over 288 in the second round.
After Scullion’s opening-round 67, he led the individual race after 18 holes. Scullion had five birdies and five bogeys in the second round, carding a birdie on No. 18 to finish the second round at even-par 71.
Scullion is five strokes off the pace of individual leader Peyton Johnson from Colorado Christian, who is at 9-under 133 after 36 holes.
Duquaine is tied for 22nd after 36 holes at 3-over 145. Duquaine had rounds of 71 and 74 on Monday.
Sophomore Jack Northgraves is tied for 30th at 4-over 146. He posted rounds of 77 and made an eight-stroke improvement of 2-under 69.
Freshman Joe Austin is tied for 82nd at 156 after rounds of 75 and 81 on Monday. Freshman Grant Hatzenbuehler is tied for 87th at 157. He had rounds of 83 and 74.
Individual player Ronnie Gibb had rounds of 75 and 70 and is tied for 22nd at 145.
The Blue Dragons tee off with Colorado Christian, Lubbock Christian and Western New Mexico at 11 a.m. CT for Tuesday’s final round.
