McPHERSON, Kan. — Washington Elementary School 4th & 5th Grade Special Education teacher Meghan Mai strives to create a safe place for her students to build confidence and feel successful.
Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce Ms. Mai as this month’s recipient of the Classroom Hero Award presented by Peoples Bank and Trust.
Each month, Ad Astra Radio randomly selects a different educator, from community nominations, to receive the Classroom Hero Award, along with a “Thank You” gift basket. Gift items are courtesy of community partners, including Peoples Bank and Trust, Midway Motors, Stutzman’s Greenhouse and Hutch Putt.
Ms. Mai, originally from Lincoln, Kan., is in her 24th year teaching in McPherson. She taught preschool for 14 years and then went back to Fort Hays State University and obtained her master’s degree to teach special education. She has been teaching special education at WES for ten years.
Ms. Mai’s always known she wanted to work with kids. Besides babysitting when she was younger, she felt pulled to follow in her father, mother and aunt’s footsteps since they were all teachers as well.
When asked what the most rewarding part of her job is, Ms. Mai said, “One thing I love about special ed is we oftentimes can be that safe place where kids start to feel successful, see that they can do things, that they can progress and they start to build their confidence.”
In a Classroom Hero Award nomination, a community member shared their appreciation for Ms. Mai.
“She [Mai] was my son’s teacher this year, and worked so hard and was the most understanding teacher I have ever encountered with my high behavior child,” they said. “She worked 1-on-1 daily with him.”
