The Allen Community College Shotgun Sports team traveled to San Antonio, Texas, over spring break to compete in the 2026 ACUI Collegiate Clay Target Championships, held at the National Shooting Complex.
Representing the Red Devils were sophomore Jaryt Hess and freshmen Jozie Stagg, Weston Cleaver, Sheldon Weber, and Shaun McLaughlin. Over four days of competition, the team faced challenging conditions, including high winds, intense heat, and a highly competitive field.
Day one featured practice rounds and the make-a-break event, a fast-paced format where two competitors shoot a sequence of targets in order, beginning with the same opening target. The event provided an opportunity for athletes to experience sporting-style targets in a competitive but engaging setting.
Competition officially began on day two with American singles trap and doubles trap. All five ACC athletes competed in singles trap, led by team captain Jaryt Hess with a score of 95/100. He was followed by Weston Cleaver (90/100), Jozie Stagg (87/100), Shaun McLaughlin (83/100), and Sheldon Weber (71/100), for a team total of 426/500.
Later in the day, three athletes competed in doubles trap. Hess again led the Red Devils with an 89/100, followed by Stagg (86/100) and Cleaver (83/100).
Day three consisted of American skeet and super sporting. Hess delivered a standout performance, recording a personal-best 92/100. Cleaver followed with 89/100, Stagg with 84/100, Weber achieved a personal best of 79/100, and McLaughlin posted a 61/100. The team finished with a combined score of 405/500.
Following skeet, three ACC athletes competed in the super sporting event, which featured varied terrain, target presentations, and sequences. Cleaver led the group with an 88/100, while Stagg scored 67/100 and Hess finished with 65/100.
The final day featured sporting clays, widely regarded as one of the most difficult events of the tournament. The course challenged shooters with targets ranging from 40 to 80 yards. Despite the difficulty, the Red Devils rose to the occasion. Hess led the team with a 75/100, while McLaughlin recorded a personal best of 62/100. Cleaver also shot 62/100, Weber added a personal-best 59/100, and Stagg finished with 56/100, bringing the team total to 314/500.
Assistant shooting coach Destry Roye praised the team’s effort and development throughout the season.
“I just want to say how proud I am of this group of individuals and how far they have come since day one,” Roye said. “The will, fire, and drive these students show is unmatched.”
Roye also highlighted the team’s resilience and growth.
“I am dually impressed with the way our athletes were able to learn and grow from the experiences at hand,” he said. “Through ups and downs, this team, made up of mostly freshmen, has shown the ability to adapt and overcome anything that comes their way. They truly show what it means to be a Red Devil.”
