Scott City, Holcomb Advance to State Quarterfinals From Larned Sub-states

The Scott City boys basketball team upset Beloit 54-38 in a Kansas Class 3A sub-state No. 1 tournament game Friday night at the Larned Middle School gymnasium.

Beloit led 12-9 after one quarter and 23-20 at halftime. Scott City outscored Beloit 14-2 in the third quarter and 20-13 in the fourth quarter.

Carlos Meza paced the Scott City Beavers with 17 points. Truitt King led the Beloit Trojans with 14 points.

Scott City will take a 14-9 record to the state quarterfinals. Beloit finished the season with an 18-5 record.

In the Class 3A boys sub-state No. 2 championship game Friday at Larned, the Holcomb Longhorns defeated the Lakin Broncs 67-36 and improved to 21-5.

Holcomb jumped out to a 20-3 first quarter lead and led at halftime 35-11.

Ayden Brown led the Longhorns with 20 points. Korbin Johnson added 10. Jesse Peregrino scored 15 of the Broncs’ 36 points.

Lakin finished the season with a 15-9 record.

In addition to Scott Community and Holcomb, other boys teams qualified for the Class 3A state tournament “Elite Eight” are Wichita Collegiate (24-1), Burlington (21-4), Silver Lake (19-6), Olathe Heritage Christian Academy (18-7) and Wellsville (14-11).

Quarterfinal matchups will take place on Tuesday at sites to be announced. Wichita Collegiate plays Wellsville, Holcomb plays Silver Lake, Hesston plays Scott Community and Burlington plays Olathe Heritage Christian Academy.

The winners advance to the Final Four semifinals on Thursday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The semifinal losers play for third place on Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena and the winners play for the state title on Saturday.
