The Halstead girls improved to 23-0 and extended their winning streak to 30 with a 46-29 win over Haven in the Kansas Class 3A girls sub-state 1 semifinals Wednesday at the Halstead gymnasium.
Halstead led 12-6 after one quarter, 21-15 at halftime and 35-18 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.
“We played hard,” said Haven girls basketball coach Dwight Roper. “We could not overcome the turnovers. Give credit to Halstead. They are a good team that’s well coached. I am proud of our team.”
Halstead girls basketball coach Derek Schutte said Haven played a physical game against the Dragons.
“It was another physical battle with Haven,” Schutte said. “We were able to create some turnovers and put a run together to start the third quarter.”
Halstead will host Garden Plain (17-7) in the championship game Saturday. The Garden Plain Owls defeated Neodesha 55-35 in the other semifinals game.
“Garden Plain will be tough,” Schutte said. “They are physical and well coached. We will need to execute well on both ends.”
Addisen Wills led the Halstead girls with 16 points. Bailey Bernal scored 9 points, Piper Schroeder 7, Onnyka Nedich 7, Tess Williams 3, Jordy Schroeder 2 and Leigha Johnson 2.
Avery Brawner and Hadley Idacavage led the Haven girls with 8 points each. Sorell DeFrain added 6 points. Aubree Nikkel scored 3 points, Tienna Bascue 2 and Rilynn Patry 2.
Haven finished the season with a 15-10 record.
