The Halstead Dragon girls basketball team, the defending Kansas Class 3A state champions, opened Haven Group A sub-state play with a 58-31 victory over Wichita Collegiate Friday night at the Halstead High School gymnasium.
Halstead led at halftime 32-13. The Dragons improved to 23-0 and won their 29th straight game.
In other Haven Group A girls games Friday, Haven defeated Minneapolis 59-33, Neodesha defeated Fredonia 44-25 and Garden Plain defeated Wichita Trinity Academy 48-43 in overtime.
The Haven girls (15-9) were led in scoring by Avery Brawner with 24 points. Rilynn Patry added 14 points and Hadley Idacavage tallied 13.
In the semifinals Wednesday, Halstead will play Haven and Garden Plain plays Neodesha.
In Haven Group B girls games Friday, Cheney (which improved to 18-5) defeated Council Grove 53-19, Hesston defeated Chaparral 66-12 at Hesston, Southeast of Saline defeated Kingman 62-30 and Caney Valley defeated Smoky Valley 61-40.
In the semifinals Wednesday, Cheney plays Hesston and Southeast of Saline plays Caney Valley.
The semifinal winners in each of the Haven sub-states play Saturday, March 7, at Haven.
