CONCORDIA – The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team achieved a feat not done since 2019 in a blowout KJCCC victory on Saturday at Cloud County.
Sophomores Katie Duncan and Noelle Anthon and freshman KaMyra Barber all reached the 20-point plateau, combining for 66 points to lead the No. 19 Blue Dragons to an 89-62 victory over Cloud County at Arley Bryant Gym.
The Blue Dragons (21-5, 16-4 KJCCC) extended their season-long win streak to six games and their win streak over Cloud County to eight games. The Dragons play host to Colby at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.
Anthon scored 15 of her career-high 23 points in the second quarter. For the game, Anthon was 9 of 13 shooting from the field and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line. She also had three assists and two steals.
Duncan scored 12 of her 23 points in the opening quarter. Duncan hit 9 of 16 total shots, including 3 of 7 from the 3-point line.
Barber was just an assist shy of a triple-double. She had 20 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists for her fifth career double-double.
Duncan, Anthon and Barber became the first Blue Dragon trio to score 20 or more points in the same game since November 12, 2019 when Abby Ogle had 29 points, Nafatoumata Haidara had 22 points and Tore Alford had 21 points against Hesston College.
The Blue Dragons shot 45.8 percent for the game (33 of 72), hitting 7 of 27 3-pointers and 18 of 24 from the free-throw line. The Dragons out-rebounded the Thunderbirds 50-35 with 18 offensive rebounds.
Cloud County shot 33.9 percent (21 of 62), hitting only 3 of 24 from 3-point range and 17 of 25 from the free-throw line.
Shea Wurtz led Cloud County with 19 points, hitting 11 of 12 free throws. Sofija Todorovic had 14 points. The Blue Dragons held the conference’s second-leading scorer Camiah Muldrow to six points.
The Blue Dragons opened the game on an 11-0 run over the first 4:07 of the game, Duncan converted a three-point play with 5:53 to go in the period to cap the run. Cloud County answered with an 11-0 run over the next 3:04, tying the game with a Muldrow bucket with 2:49 remaining in the quarter. The Dragons then closed the half with a 9-3 run, taking a 20-14 lead on a Whitney Brown transition hoop at the end of the first quarter.
Leading 27-23 with 5:14 remaining in the first half, Anthon went on a tear scoring 11-straight points for the Blue Dragons and leading a 15-4 Hutchinson run. Anthon completed a three-point play to end her personal run to give the Blue Dragons a 38-27 lead with 2:58 to play in the half. The Blue Dragons scored the final seven points of the half – two from Anthon to give her 15 points in the quarter, three from Duncan and two from Brown – to lead 47-31 at halftime.
Cloud County cut the Dragon lead to 55-44 with 5:55 to play in the third quarter. The Dragons took control of the game over the next 4 minutes with a 14-2 run. Duncan capped the run with a 3-pointer for a 69-46 lead with 46 seconds to play in the third quarter.
Hutchinson’s largest lead of the game was 30 points when Tayla Galucho scored with 5:15 to play in the fourth quarter.
