TOPEKA – Two more Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field athletes earned spots at next month’s NJCAA Indoor championships on Saturday at the Ichabod Invitational at the Sneed Indoor Athletic Center.
Sophomore Da’Shawn Lester earned a nationals berth in the 400 meters and freshman Esteban Oses Campos qualified in the Mile run on Saturday. The Blue Dragons now have 13 qualifiers for the 2026 NJCAA Indoor Championships on March 6-7 in Topeka.
Lester finished fourth at the Ichabod Invitational 400 with a personal-record time of 48.10 seconds. That national qualifying mark is the second-fastest 400 in Blue Dragon indoor history.
Oses Campos placed fifth in the Mile run with a personal-record time of 4:11.74. Oses Campos posted the fifth-fastest Mile time in Blue Dragon indoor history.
In other Blue Dragon performances on Saturday:
+ Wesley Gill placed seventh in the pole vault at 12 feet, 9 1/2 inches. (3.90 meters). Gill was 11th in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries with a time of 8.43 seconds.
+ Sprinter Giavonni Jones just missed the 60-meter finals, placing ninth in prelims with a time of 6.98 seconds.
+ Cornelius Kogo was ninth in the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:27.08.
+ Tristan Sanders placed 11th in the men’s triple jump at 45 feet, 8 1/2 inches (13.93 meters).
+ Esteban Ortega placed 18th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:35.97, which is the fifth-fastest time in Blue Dragon indoor history.
Next up for the Blue Dragon men’s track and field team is the Region 6 Indoor Championships next Saturday and Sunday at the Robert Plaster Center in Pittsburg.
