Halstead Girls, Haven Boys Triumph Tuesday at Haven Gymnasium

The Halstead Dragon girls and boys basketball teams split varsity games with Haven Friday night at the Haven High School gymnasium.

The Halstead girls won 40-30 and the Haven boys won 61-58.

The Halstead girls led Haven 10-6 after one quarter, 20-13 at halftime and 30-18 after three quarters. Haven outscored Halstead 12-10 in the fourth quarter.

Piper Schroeder led Halstead with 12 points and Addisen Wills added 10 points.

Rilynn Patry (13) and Avery Brawner (12) scored 25 of the Haven girls team’s 30 points.

“It was a physical game and both teams played hard,” said Halstead girls coach Derek Schutte. “We were able to force some turnovers and get some baskets in transition and that was the main difference in the game.”

The varsity boys game was tied 31-31 at halftime. Halstead led 48-44 at the end of the third quarter. Haven outscored Halstead 17-10 in the fourth quarter.

Brogan Wray led the Haven boys in scoring with 19 points. Logan Jacques and Cole Brawner each scored 11 points. Kolton Altvater had 10 points and 9 assists. Brawner grabbed 6 rebounds.

Reece Carmichael led Halstead with 13 points. Jackson Wendling scored 12 points, Carlos Martinez 10, Damien Whillock 9 and Mario Diaz 8. Martinez had 5 assists and Carmichael 4. Nash Brantley pulled down 9 rebounds.

Friday night was Haven’s Senior Night. Senior girls are Hadley Idacavage, Hallie Williams, Avery Brawner, Abby Nisly, Sorrel DeFrain and Karlee Cooprider. Senior boys are Jace Martin and Devin Bruce.

Haven plays at Larned next Tuesday and Halstead hosts Smoky Valley. Next Friday, Haven plays at Hesston and Halstead plays at McPherson Elyria Christian.
