Hesston Boys Move to 5-0 in CKL; Swather Girls Win Big

LINDSBORG, Kan. – Smoky Valley hosted Hesston in a Central Kansas League doubleheader on Friday night.  In the girls game, the Swathers used an 11-0 run late in the first quarter to take an early lead on their way to a big win.  The boys contest was much the same as Hesston had a 12-0 run to end the first quarter and never looked back, completing the sweep of the Vikings.


Girls-Hesston 55, Smoky Valley 24 – Hesston held a 6-4 lead in the first quarter and after their 11-0 run, they led 19-6 after one.  Callie Yoder scored 12 of Hesston’s 19 first quarter points.  The Swathers held a 28-13 lead at halftime and stretched it to 45-21 by the end of the third.  A 10-3 fourth quarter for Hesston gave them the 31-point win in the end.  Yoder finished with 14 points to lead all scorers.  Freshman Tessa Martin was also in double figures with 11 points for the Swathers.  Brennan Anderson, who came into the game averaging less than a point per game, finished with nine points.  They improved to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in the CKL with the win.  Smoky Valley fell to 6-11 and 1-4 in the league.  They were led by Natalee Brown with six points.

Boys- Hesston 70, Smoky Valley 36 – Hesston had a 5-4 lead early in the first quarter and went on a 12-0 run to stretch their lead to 17-4.  A 24-14 second quarter gave them a 23-point lead by halftime.  The Swathers shot 70% from the floor in the first half.  They did not slow down in the third quarter, outscoring Smoky Valley 23-8 to take a 64-26 lead.  The Vikings posted a 10-6 advantage in the fourth quarter, but Hesston had made their mark.  Ranked #2 in 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, Hesston improved to 19-1 overall and 6-0 in the CKL.  They finished 66% from the floor for the game and made eight of 16 three-point attempts.  Ty Unruh scored a game-high 24 points for the Swathers, shooting 9-12 from the floor, 4-5 from the free throw line and connecting on both of his three-point tries.  Kason Landes was 7-8 from the field and finished with 15 points.  Smoky Valley fell to 11-6 and 3-2 in the CKL with the loss.  Kaleb Burgardt was their only double figure scorer, finishing with ten points.  Kristian Ryan scored eight, being held below double figures for just the second time this season.
