Smoky Valley & Hillsboro Split CKL Battle

HILLSBORO, Kan. – Smoky Valley and Hillsboro met in a Central Kansas League showdown on Tuesday night.  In the girls game, offense was hard to come by early, but the Trojans got rolling first, picking up a 16-point win.  In the boys contest, Smoky Valley jumped out to a big lead early, but Hillsboro responded.  The Vikings picked up an eight-point win in the end.


Girls-Hillsboro 40, Smoky Valley 24– It was a slow start on offense for each team as Hillsboro led just 5-0 after the first quarter.  The Trojans picked up the pace a bit in the second quarter as Ella Potucek connected on three three-point baskets to give Hillsboro a 14-0 lead.  They took a 16-2 lead into the locker room at half.  Both teams were able to get more offense going in the second half.  In all, Hillsboro outscored Smoky Valley 24-22 in the second half.  Potucek was the only double figure scorer for either team as she finished with 16 points, shooting 4-8 from three-point range.  The Trojans are now 13-4 overall and improved to 5-1 in the CKL.  Smoky Valley fell to 6-10 and 1-3 in the league.  Kamryn Ryan led the Vikings with five points.

Boys- Smoky Valley 56, Hillsboro 48 – The Vikings got off to a hot start, taking an 11-0 lead early in the first.  Hillsboro refused to go quietly, though.  Trailing 16-8 after one, the Trojans outscored Smoky Valley 17-6 in the second quarter to take a 25-22 lead at halftime.  The Vikings responded with another strong start in the third quarter.  A three-pointer from Atticus Pavlovich put them up 29-27, setting the tone for the quarter.  Tied at 29, Smoky Valley went on a 9-0 run to take a 38-29 lead and they would hold on to that nine-point advantage after three.  Hillsboro was never able to trim the lead any closer than five in the end.  Kristian Ryan led Smoky Valley in scoring once again with 19 points.  After missing Friday’s win at Haven, Ty Heitschmidt scored 11 and Pavolvich finished with ten points, all in the third quarter.  Smoky Valley is now 11-5 and 3-1 in the CKL.  Hillsboro fell to 1-16 and 1-5.  The Trojans had three players in double figures led by Braxton Hiebert with 15.  Koehn Janzen scored 15 and Brayson Amstutz added ten points, all in the second half.
