Roberto Guerrero Sets Career High in Scoring as Trinity Catholic Boys Upend Smoky Valley

Roberto Guerrero scored a career-high 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting, Alex Guajardo continued his strong return, and the Trinity Catholic boys basketball team shook off Friday’s disappointing loss by beating Smoky Valley 59-48 on Tuesday in the first round of the Sterling Invitational.

The sixth-seeded Celtics were the lowest seed to win on Tuesday, in both the boys and girls brackets.

Friday, Trinity led Remington 29-6 after one quarter and 40-18 at halftime, but ended up losing. The disappointment didn’t linger.

Trinity ignored a slow start, trailing 16-9 early, but closing to 27-21 at halftime.

The Celtics then dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 24-9.

Trinity shot a touch under 50% (21 of 43) and also sank 12 of 14 free throws. Guajardo added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Beau Towell also continued his strong play by scoring 12 points. four rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Ty Heitschmidt led Smoky Valley with 15 points.

Trinity improved to 4-7 and will take on Hugoton in the 6 p.m. semifinal on Thursday, Smoky Valley will play Southeast of Saline in a 4:30 consolation semifinal.
