Lady Warriors Come Up Short Against Spires

STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College fell to the University of Saint Mary, 71-59, at Gleason Center on Saturday, Jan. 3, despite a fourth-quarter surge where Sterling scored 24 points. Sterling was led by their ability to capitalize on second-chance opportunities, scoring 16 points in that category.

The Lady Warriors started the quarter with strong defensive pressure, generating turnovers that led to scoring opportunities. Karlee Jacobs spearheaded the effort with a steal and fast-break layup, followed by a successful free throw to build momentum. The team capitalized on fast-break opportunities, with Kali Briar contributing a layup that extended the lead.

As the quarter progressed, Sterling maintained their edge by converting key free throws, despite Saint Mary’s attempts to close the gap. Nevaeh Johnson added a three-pointer to solidify the lead. The quarter ended with the Lady Warriors leading 14-10, successfully leveraging defensive stops and transition plays to hold their advantage.

In the second quarter, Sterling initially extended their lead with a layup by McKenna Vogl, assisted by Rori Miles, bringing the score to 16-10. Sterling’s defense was highlighted by a block and several steals, but challenges on the offensive end saw them converting only one basket throughout the quarter. Despite this, they maintained pressure with successful free throws scoring seven of their nine points in the quarter from the charity stripe, keeping the game balanced.

As the quarter progressed, Saint Mary gradually closed the gap, taking the lead with a 3-pointer and maintaining momentum. They capitalized on Sterling’s turnovers, ending the quarter with a layup in the closing seconds. The quarter concluded with Sterling trailing, the score standing at 24-23 in favor of the Spires.

The Lady Warriors struggled to regain momentum in the third quarter as the Spires capitalized on a series of turnovers. Jacobs faced pressure, leading to early turnovers that allowed the visitors to widen the gap. Despite a solid defensive effort highlighted by four steals, Sterling found it challenging to convert opportunities into points, shooting 5-for-17 from the field.

Briar contributed with a crucial jumper and defensive rebounds, but the Spires’ efficient shooting, including three 3-pointers, kept the home team at bay. Vogl and Miles each made significant buckets to keep Sterling within reach, but late scoring by the visitors extended their lead. Sterling closed the quarter trailing 48–35.

The Lady Warriors opened the fourth quarter with strong offensive efforts, highlighted by Vogl’s tip-in at 9:33, cutting the deficit early. However, the Spires responded with a three-pointer from Addison Tower at 9:19, maintaining their lead.

Throughout the quarter, Sterling continued to find success in the paint, led by Vogl, who contributed significantly with multiple layups and free throws. Sterling’s defensive efforts included a block and several rebounds by Vogl, keeping the contest competitive.

In the closing minutes, Sterling’s offense managed to outscore the Spires 24-23 in the final quarter. Despite their efforts, the game concluded with a score of 71-59 in favor of Saint Mary.

Vogl led Sterling College with 26 points and recorded 10 rebounds, contributing significantly to the team’s board presence. Briar added nine points and collected a notable four steals, showcasing her defensive capabilities. Johnson made an impact with six points, including a perfect 1-for-1 from beyond the arc. Jacobs finished with 10 points and added three rebounds to her performance.

The Lady Warriors move to 11-3 on the season and 7-1 in conference play. They will face Friends University (13-1, 7-1) in the Gleason Center on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. for Community Night where Sterling College will recognize Sterling High School’s 2025 State Champions.

The debate and forensics team along with Chelsea Brown (tennis) and Julia Kilgore (track) will be recognized at halftime of the women’s team and the boy’s basketball team and football team will be recognized at halftime of the men’s game. USD376 students will receive free admission while community members will get discounted tickets for $5 at the gate (cash or credit).
