The Barton Community College wrestling team closed out the fall semester Sunday by hosting the annual Cougar Open inside the PAC Center at Great Bend High School. Barton produced 10 placers across the brackets, as 15 wrestlers combined for a 17-27 overall mark with 11 different Cougars earning victories over the day.
Leading the way for Barton was Brennen Pfannenstiel, who captured the 149-pound title with a perfect 3-0 performance. The freshman opened with a 3-1 decision over Pratt’s Dustin Loughrie before advancing to the finals with a 3:41 fall against Fort Hays Tech Northwest’s Owen Younger. In the championship bout, he secured the title with a 2:38 pin over unattached Zach Redwine.
The Cougars added a pair of runner-up finishes behind the showings from S’Ron Hill (184) and Brody Schnoebelen (197). Hill went 2-1 on the day, earning a 4:08 fall in the quarterfinals and a 6-3 semifinal decision over Fort Hays State University’s Cameron Shultz before falling in the final. Schnoebelen also tallied a 2-1 day, opening with a 2:29 pin and adding a 52-second fall in his trio of round robin tilts.
Falling just outside of a top three finish, Kike Yanez (125) and Derek Truman (174) each settled for fourth places in their respective brackets. Yanez capped his day 2-1, securing a 2:59 fall in the quarterfinals and a 45-second pin in the consolation semifinals. Truman battled through a 2-2 day, rebounding with a 1:30 pin and a 9-6 decision to reach the third-place bout.
Rounding out Barton’s placers were Gabe Swoyer (165) and Teron Kraft (184), each with sixth-place finishes, while Joshua “AJ” Almanza (133), Tyler Gouker (149), and Isaac Fall (157) added eighth-place results to round out the Cougars’ 10 placers over the tournament.
Additional victories in the Cougar lineup came from Julian Orrantia (125), Logan Buchanan (285), and Keyven Schroeder (285), each picking up a win on the day.
Competing unattached, Colin Little added a fifth-place result at 157 pounds, while Bryson Parker followed with a seventh-place finish at 133.
Coming out of the holiday break, Barton opens the January schedule on Sunday, January 4, at the Jet Open, beginning a stretch that includes eight events.
