The Nickerson High School boys and girls basketball teams both fell to Plainville Thursday on Day 2 of the Larned Keady Classic.
The Nickerson boys went down to the wire against Plainville but fell short 80-77. The Plainville girls defeated Nickerson 55-24.
The Nickerson Panther boys led Plainville 19-15 after one quarter and trailed 42-36 at halftime. The Cardinals outscored the Panthers 19-16 in the third quarter to lead 61-52.
Nickerson outscored Plainville 25-19 in the fourth quarter to close to final score to 3 points.
Riley Brawner poured in 28 points for the Nickerson Panthers and Austin Peterson added 23. Cameron Welch tallied 13 points.
Joey Dintino was on fire for the Plainville Cardinals with 38 points, including three 3-pointers. He scored 6 points in the first quarter, 12 in the second quarter, 10 in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth quarter.
Davyn Willeford scored 19 points and Easton Ditter tacked on 11.
The 157 combined points by Plainville and Nickerson set a new tournament record, surpassing the old record of 145.
The Plainville girls led the Panthers 17-8 at the end of the first quarter, 32-14 at halftime and 50-20 after three quarters.
Because of the 30-point rule, the fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Both teams scored 4 points.
The Nickerson girls were led in scoring by Jayanna Cornejo with 7 points. Centhiyah Bankston added 5 points, Kenna Haggard 4, Madilyn Rohling 3, Taylor Galloway 2, Aleah Collins 2 and Paige Loitz 1.
Three players scored 12 points each for the Cardinals — Emma Fuzzell, Chloe Jackson and Elizabeth Deustcher. Chasey Bittle added 8.
The Keady Classic semifinal games will be played Friday and the finals on Saturday..
In the boys semifinal games Friday, St. John plays Holcomb at 5 p.m. at the Larned High School gym and Bucklin will play Larned at 5:30 p.m. at the Larned Middle School gym.
The Plainville boys play Kinsley for fifth place at 5:15 p.m. Saturday at Larned High School. Kinsley defeated Bucklin 56-42 in the other boys consolation game on Thursday.
The Nickerson Panther boys will play Bucklin for seventh-place at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Larned High School.
The boys third-place game is at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and the championship game is at 5:45 p.m. at Larned Middle School.
In the girls semifinal games Friday, St. John will play Holcomb at 5 p.m. at Larned High School and Larned will play Bucklin at 5:30 p.m. at Larned Middle School.
The third-pace girls game will be played at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and the championship game starts at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at Larned Middle School.
The Hoisington girls will play Plainville for fifth place at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Lrned High School. The Hoisington girls defeated Kinsley 70-28.
The Nickerson girls will play Kinsley in the seventh-place game at noon Saturday at the Larned High School gym.
