HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce this month’s recipient of the Classroom Hero Award, presented by Heartland Credit Union.

Aubrey Powell, 7th Grade math teacher at Reno Valley Middle School, was presented the Classroom Hero Award on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Each month, Ad Astra Radio honors a different educator, selected from community nominations, to receive the Classroom Hero Award, along with a “hero” gift basket, courtesy of community partners Heartland Credit Union, Midway Motors of Hutchinson, Stutzman’s Greenhouse, Hutch Putt and The Foto Cowboy.

This is Ms. Powell’s first year teaching at Reno Valley Middle School and her first year of teaching overall.

Ms. Powell is a Sterling College alumna, originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado.

“I grew up going to a Kansas Bible camp, so I was looking for a Christian college in the Midwest,” Powell shared.

When asked what her favorite part about being a teacher is, Ms. Powell said, “When the kids don’t get it the first three times I teach them something, if I teach it a fourth way, and then they get it, that’s so cool.”

Advice that Powell would give to another first-year teacher would be: “Be surrounded by really good people.”

In a nomination for Ms. Powell, a member of the USD 309 community shared that Powell goes out of her way to show that she cares for her students.

“It’s not unusual for her to show up and cheer on the cross country team, or show up with flowers for her students in the musical,” the nominator said. “My daughter comes home talking about how much she loves Ms. Powell nearly every day. She’s making a huge impact on these kids.”

The Classroom Hero Award seeks to highlight the hard work and dedication of those on the front lines of our local schools. Nominations can be submitted at https://www.adastraradio.com/classroomhero/.
