MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State Head Football Coach Chris Klieman is considering retirement, and Collin Klein will return to Manhattan to be the next head coach, according to the Manhattan Mercury and On3 Sports.

A source close to K-State confirmed the rumor to Ad Astra Radio. Sources have also confirmed the news to the Associated Press. The news first broke in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Dec. 3, stating that the transition is expected to take place this week.

K-State will hold a press conference at 4:00 p.m., replacing a previously scheduled conference at 11:00 a.m. regarding Signing Day. The first portion of the press conference will feature Director of Football Recruiting Taylor Braet, who will speak on those who signed with K-State. Following Braet’s remarks, Klieman and K-State Athletics Director Gene Taylor will address the media.

Klein, a former star QB at K-State and the 2012 Heisman Trophy runner-up, is in his second season as the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M. The Aggies currently are on pace to get a berth into the College Football Playoff. It is unclear if Klein would be allowed to coach the Aggies if they are selected. Before his job at Texas A&M, Klein was an offensive coordinator at K-State under Klieman.

Klieman has been the head coach of the Wildcats for seven seasons, which included a Big 12 title in 2022 and a bowl trip in six of his seven years in Manhattan.
