STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College defeated Avila University 89-76 on Saturday, Nov. 22 in the Gleason Center. The Warriors capitalized on their free throw opportunities, converting 30 of 39 attempts for a 76.9 percent success rate.
Sterling initiated the first half with a strong start, as Ethan Wiley connected on a three-pointer, assisted by Julian Smith, in the opening seconds. The Warriors maintained momentum by executing successful three-point shots, including key contributions from Ziri Blackwood and Javion Reed. Despite their efforts, Sterling was engaged in a tightly contested battle with Avila, as the lead exchanged hands multiple times throughout the half.
The half progressed with Sterling effectively utilizing their bench, contributing 19 points off the bench to keep pace with the Eagles. Sterling’s defense also played a crucial role, with Amiri Ndayisaba securing a pivotal steal as they continued to keep the score close. The half concluded with a dramatic sequence, where Blackwood’s jumper tied the game at 37-37 with only 25 seconds remaining. However, Avila managed a last-second tip-in to edge ahead, leaving Sterling trailing 39-37 at the end of the first half.
Sterling opened the second half with a decisive steal, followed by a fast-break dunk by Joe Oparaeke, immediately leveling the score. This set the tone for a competitive half marked by back-and-forth scoring. Key moments included a pivotal three-point shot by Ndayisaba at 14:54, followed by a series of successful free throws that allowed Sterling to maintain a narrow advantage over Avila.
As the half progressed, Sterling capitalized on defensive rebounds and turnovers, extending their lead with a balanced attack. Blackwood’s consistent shooting added to the momentum, supported by Smith’s three-pointer at 3:33. Sterling’s defense held firm, limiting the Eagles’ scoring opportunities, and secured the half with a series of free throws in the final minutes. The half concluded with Sterling ahead, 89-76, outscoring Avila 52-37 in the second half.
Blackwood scored 29 points, hitting six 3-pointers and added three assists. Smith collected 11 rebounds and contributed nine points. Ndayisaba finished with 16 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and recorded two steals. Oparaeke posted nine points and grabbed nine rebounds, while also blocking a shot.
Sterling improves to 4-3 on the season, 3-0 in conference. The Warriors will take on Barclay College (0-3) on Monday, Nov. 24 in Haviland, Kan. at 6 p.m.
