McPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson City Commissioners Wednesday approved a just over $403,000 change order on the West 1st street reconstruction project.

Public Works Director Eric Duerksen said the change order came about when staff found areas where deteriorated concrete extended past initially identified locations, with this, there were additional removals to the point concrete milling and asphalt overlay were no longer needed.

That also offsets part of the added cost of concrete work. Duerksen said they are currently obtaining quotes for joint sealant to help preserve the concrete.

He also said street crews have for the past several weeks been working on patching and filling potholes, which they will do as weather allows. If you have a pothole in your neighborhood needing to be filled, you’re encouraged to report that through the See-Click-Fix program, which can be found on the city’s website, www.mcpcity.com.

Commissioners approved the 2026 employee benefit plans. The plan, which is administered through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas, is a self-funded model which is handled through a cooperative group of municipalities and other public employees that enables the city to benefit from shared resources and cost savings while maintaining local control over plan design and administration. This includes four medical plan options, the city’s wellness plan, and other coverage along with a number of voluntary plans.

McPherson City Commissioners Wednesday approved a couple of holiday-related special event requests, one of which involves a change in the route for the Christmas Parade of Lights Saturday, Dec. 6.

This year, the Christmas parade will follow what’s referred to as the All Schools Day route, staging on Hickory Street, then going east on First to Main, and south on Main to the area of Kansas and Maple where they plan to have food trucks and vendors. Also approved was the McPherson County Toy Run Saturday, Nov. 29, which will start at Walmart and finish at the American Legion.
