The Barton Community College women’s basketball team tipped off its 2025-26 season this weekend in Denison, Texas, returning home with a pair of losses at the Grayson Classic.
Opening play Friday, the Cougars were outmatched for much of the contest in a 66-36 setback to Collin County Community College.
Deadlocked at nine midway through the opening quarter, Collin caught fire to close the half on a 30-2 surge before a late Regina Donanu jumper ended Barton’s drought, sending the Cougars into the locker room trailing 39-13.
Barton showed signs of life in the fourth quarter with a 14-13 edge, but the deficit proved too steep in what marked the program’s sixth-lowest scoring total on record.
Looking to bounce back in Saturday’s high-noon matchup, Barton battled No. 21-ranked Grayson College before falling 63-50.
Runs of 12-2 defined the first half as Grayson used its spurt to close the opening period ahead by 14, only for the Cougars to answer with a ten-point swing to trim the margin to 30-27 at halftime.
The three-point difference carried into the fourth before a quick five-point burst by the Vikings created enough separation to hold off Barton’s late push.
Next up for the Cougars is a two-game trip to St. Petersburg, Florida, opening Friday at 5 p.m. against St. Petersburg College and concluding Saturday at noon versus Hillsborough Community College.
