Karmelo Green rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown, and Robert Hunter accounted for four touchdowns, as the Hutchinson High football team blanked Emporia 34-0 on Friday in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs at Gowans Stadium.
Green ran the ball just eight times, averaging 17 yards a carry.
Hunter opened the scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run on the Salthawks’ opening possession. Hunter then had a 1-yard touchdown pass to Larry Jeremiah Jr. in the second quarter, and added a 3-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter, as Hutch built a 20-0 halftime lead.
Hunter threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Lamar Govain in the third quarter, and Green capped off the scoring on a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Hutchinson finished with 332 yards of offense, while the defense clamped down on Emporia, holding the Spartans to 175 yards on 54 plays.
The fourth-seeded Salthawks advance to the second round, where they will host last year’s 5A runner-up Hays.
