Hesston Earns Trip to 3A State Volleyball; Defending Champion Halstead Upset in Sub-State Opener

There will be a new Kansas 3A state champion in 2025 because the Halstead Dragons were upset at their own sub-state Saturday.

The No. 4 seed Garden Plain Owls defeated No. 1 seed Halstead 25-19, 25-23 in the semifinals.

The Dragons finished the season with a 33-6 record.

Garden Plain lost to Hesston 25-14, 23-25, 25-21 in the Halstead sub-state championship. Hesston defeated Burlington 25-19, 25-21 in the semifinals.

In the Class 3A sub-state at Wichita Trinity Academy, Cheney won its first-round match over Chaparral 25-14, 25-13 and lost to Wichita Trinity Academy 26-24, 20-25, 26-24 in the championship match.

The Kansas Class 3A state tournament will take place next Thursday through Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

In addition to Hesston (26-12) and Wichita Trinity Academy (28-5), others making the trip to Hutchinson for the state tournament will be Ellsworth (32-7), Hoisington (36-4), Silver Lake (41-1), Holton (24-9), Riverton (36-4) and Osage City (27-12).
