Halstead earned a spot in the Class 2A playoffs as they defeated Lyons 56-13 on Friday.
Halstead took the lead on a touchdown by Edric Zorn with 7 minutes to go in the first quarter. Lyons tied the game seven seconds into the second quarter when David Pando scored on an 11-yard run around the right end. Halstead then scored 49 unanswered points with three touchdowns in the second quarter, three more scores in the third quarter, and one final score in the fourth quarter.
Lyons was able to score late with under 2:00 remaining in the game as Xander Young was able to get in the endzone on a 5-yard run.
Halstead had 260 yards rushing on 32 carries. Reece Carmichael led the way for the Dragons with 186 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns. Also scoring rushing touchdowns for Halstead were Edric Zorn with one, Damien Whillock with two, Â Brock Odendahl with one score, and Jacob Bennett with one.
Quarterback Damien Whillock was also 12 of 16 in passing for 167 yards. Whillock threw the lone TD to Noah Diehl. Diehl was the leading receiver for the Dragons as he caught six passes for 108 yards. Halstead had six different players score touchdowns.
Lyons rushed for 155 yards on 35 carries and was led by David Pando with 101 yards on 14 carries and a TD. David Pando also completed 5 of 17 passes for 48 yards. Detrell Stanley had 3 receptions for Lyons and led the defense for Lyons with an interception and a fumble recovery all in the second quarter.
Halstead improves their record to 2-6 Â overall and 1-3 in District 6 play. They will make the playoffs as the No. 4 seed from District 6. Lyons falls to 0-8 on the season and 0-4 in District 6. They will travel to Belle Plaine on Thursday for a 7:00 non-playoff game.
