Scoring a multitude of ways in its return to Gowans Stadium from a 35-day road trip, the Hutchinson Community College football team pushed a winning streak to 10 or more games for the seventh time in program history on Saturday.
Kordell Gouldsby returned two punts for touchdowns and Derrick Salley Jr. had his third game this season with three touchdown receptions to lead the No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons to a decisive 71-12 victory over the Independence Pirates.
Dating back to the final four games of the 2024 season, the Blue Dragons (6-0, 2-0 KJCCC) tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in program history at 10 with its fifth-straight win over Independence. Hutchinson plays host to No. 12 Coffeyville at 7 p.m. next Saturday at Gowans Stadium. Independence fell to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the KJCCC.
Gouldsby had his fourth and fifth career returns for touchdown on Saturday with punt returns of 34 and 56 yards four touchdowns. Gouldsby had four punt returns for 118 total yards to go with his two receptions for 37 yards and six yards rushing to account for 161 all-purpose yards.
Salley’s third three-receiving touchdown game of the season helped him tie Lonnie Crittenden (1970) and Cordarrelle Patterson (2011) for the second-most touchdowns receptions in a season with 12. Salley led the Dragon receivers with 63 yards on four catches and touchdowns of 1, 5 and 45 yards.
Quarterback Christian Johnson completed 9 of 12 passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson rushed for 17 yards. Back-up quarterback Hudson Ferralez was 6 of 12 passing for 99 yards. Ferralez also had two rushing touchdowns of 2 and 1 yard and finished with 17 rushing yards.
Defensively, the Blue Dragons had a season-high 10 quarterback sacks, which tied for the third-most quarterback sacks in a single game in Blue Dragon history. J’Lynn Allen had a career-best three sacks to lead the Dragon defense.
DaMun Allen had his fourth interception in the last three games. Amir Hill and Earl Parker also had interceptions to lead a five-takeaway day for the Dragon defense.
The Blue Dragons out-rushed Independence 200-29. Daeshawn Carter was Hutchinson’s leading rusher with 50 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Lekedrin Harvey had 49 rush yards on seven carries and a touchdown.
Hutchinson outgained Independence 415-294.
The Blue teams accounted for 29 total points against the Pirates. Placekicker Alejandro de le Poza kicked field goals of 31, 41 and 26 yards and was 8 of 9 on extra points to finish with 17 points.
The Dragons added their seventh blocked kick of the season when Hill blocked a Pirate punt.
The Blue Dragons led 17-0 after one quarter after Salley’s 1-yard touchdown run, de la Poza’s 31 yard field goal and Carter’s 14-yard rushing touchdown.
Hutchinson led 37-0 at halftime with a 20-point second quarter. The Dragons led 58-6 after three quarters.
