Buhler Girls Tennis Team Places 2nd at Class 4A Home Regional, Qualifies 4 for State

The Buhler High School girls tennis team placed second at the Kansas Class 4A regional Friday on the Buhler tennis courts.

Sofia Spies, the defending state singles champion, placed second in singles at the regional. Teammate Ella Gillespie placed sixth. Spies has a 24-6 record and Gillespie is 19-11.

Nickerson singles players Amelia Kinast and Breckin Kelman received first-round byes and lost in the second round.

In doubles, Buhler’s Emily Allen and Kylee Bradshaw placed third and will take a 22-12 record to state.

Buhler’s other doubles team of Katelyn Harding and Addy Tech received a first-round bye and lost their second round match.

Nickerson’s doubles teams of Kyleigh Hathaway-Lily Chapman and Kierstyn Pontius-Fianne Hurlburt both lost in the first round.

The top six singles players and top six doubles teams qualified for the 4A state tournament Oct. 17-18 at the Harmon Park Tennis Complex in Prairie Village.

The host school for the 4A state tennis tournament is Shawnee Mission-Bishop Miege High School.
