McPHERSON, Kan. – The McPherson High School Girls Tennis team won the 2025 Regionals title Friday, Oct. 10 at home.

The Bullpups won both the Singles and Doubles tournaments, and all participants finished in the top three in their respective brackets.

Maryn Sandbo won the Singles tournament, going a perfect 4-0 on the day. “Maryn is the definition of mental toughness,” Head Coach Tyler Brown said. “Whether she’s up or down in a match, you’d never know by her body language. She stays locked in, receptive to feedback, and always gives her best effort.”

The Singles championship match was a battle of the Bullpups, as McPherson freshman Mayson Wiens finished second. “[Wiens] sure didn’t look like a freshman,” Brown said. “This was her most complete tournament of the season. She only dropped three games on her way to the championship match. Winning 36 of her first 39 games at Regionals is quite a start to a high school career. Her focus and poise were remarkable.”

McPherson also won the Doubles tournament, with the duo of Quinn Liebl and Avery Unruh going 4-0 in the bracket. The other Doubles team of Dragon Rodriguez and Lleyton Kuhn finished 3rd.

Brown said they both duos hit rough patches in the quarterfinals, but battled through. “Pressure and emotions were running high, but they dug deep, showed tremendous composure, and both pulled out super-tiebreaker wins to advance to the semifinals,” Brown said. It would mean that both duos had to face each other in the semifinals, but Brown said they competed with confidence and calmness in the tournament.

Brown also mentioned that their goal of qualifying all six players to state was a success. “With strong teams like Hesston and Chapman in our Regional, the level of play was outstanding,” Brown said. “We’re excited to head to Prairie Village next week to represent McPherson High School at the 4A State Tournament. It’s going to be a fun weekend.”

The 4A State Championships will take place in Prairie Village Oct. 17-18.
