GREAT BEND, Kan. (Oct. 6, 2025) — Mayor Cody Schmidt has proclaimed October 15, 2025, as White Cane Day in the City of Great Bend, announced at Monday’s City Council meeting. A nationwide observance since 1964, White Cane Day celebrates the accomplishments of the blind and visually impaired.
The City of Great Bend asks all citizens to recognize the importance of accessibility for individuals who are blind or visually impaired and to support the efforts that promote awareness, inclusion and equal opportunity for all. It also serves as a reminder that it is a collective responsibility to foster accessibility, eliminate barriers and ensure safety for pedestrians with visual impairments.
A universal symbol that signifies the user of the cane has a visual impairment, its white color was meticulously chosen for its brightness to provide high visibility to pedestrians and motorist. It also symbolizes independence, empowerment, freedom, self-reliance and dignity for those who are blind and visually impaired.
The City of Great Bend is committed to promoting awareness, inclusion and equal opportunities for all residents — including those with disabilities — and commends the organizations, advocates, families and individuals in Great Bend who provide support by providing resources, advocacy and encouragement.
