LINDSBORG, Kan. – Blayne Wilson ran for three first quarter touchdowns to give Hesston a 21-0 lead over Smoky Valley on Friday night. The Swathers never looked back on their way to a 51-0 shutout of the Vikings in 3A District 6 action.
Wilson had touchdown runs over 12, 18 and 14 yards in the first quarter as Hesston had the 21-point advantage going into the second quarter. The passing game picked up from there as Jerick Humphreys had touchdown passes of 38 yards to Daxon Deering and 27 yards to Kason Landes. Sandwiched in between those plays was a safety on a snap that went through the end zone on a punt attempt for Smoky Valley. The Swathers led 37-0 when Josh Duerksen picked off a Ty Heitschmidt pass and returned it 24 yards for a score and a 44-0 halftime lead.
The second half featured a running clock as Hesston ran just three plays. Smoky Valley held the ball most of the third and fourth quarters. Gavin Larson registered a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Swathers as the lone score of the second half.
Hesston had 276 yards of total offense with 272 in the first half. Wilson finished with ten carries for 154 yards and the three scores. Humphreys was 9-11 for 172 yards and two touchdowns passing. The Vikings mustered just 92 total yards in the loss.
Hesston moved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in 3A District 6 while Smoky Valley dropped to 0-2 in the district and 2-3 overall. Next up for Smoky Valley is a trip to 3A #1 Andale (5-0, 1-0) this coming Friday night. Hesston will host Trinity Academy (3-2, 1-0) on Friday.
