Drew Dechant had another stellar game, and the Trinity Catholic defense stuffed Conway Springs’ vaunted rushing attack Friday, as the Celtics won their fourth game in a row by beating the two-time reigning Class 1A champion 40-6.

Dechant, a senior quarterback and defensive back, continued his strong play. He completed 6 of 8 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns, while running six times for 130 yards and two scores.

Kaid McElgunn had a couple early punt returns that set the Celtics offense up with good field position. The first time, the Celtics came up empty. The second time, Dechant scored on a 40-yard run, giving the Celtics an early 7-0 lead.

Then, McElgunn fielded another punt. This time, he returned it 66 yards for a touchdown.

Trinity dominated the second quarter, outscoring Conway Springs 20-0. Bentyn Chastain had a pair of touchdown catches, measuring 46 and 38 yards. Dechant added a 28-yard touchdown run.

Trinity invoked the running clock early in the third quarter on Dechant’s perfect bomb down the right sideline, against the wind, to McElgunn, who took it to the end zone for a 55-yard touchdown.

Conway Springs mustered just 129 yards of offense, 53 of which came on its last offensive snap, a touchdown run by Logan Osner.

Trinity improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Class 1A, District 7 play. The Celtics will head to Ellinwood next week.
