Tennis Season Winding Down; Viking Fall Sports Season Rolls On

LINDSBORG, Kan. – Fall sports continue to keep things busy at Smoky Valley as the football team opened district play this Friday night and volleyball and girls tennis had early week competition this past week.

FOOTBALL

The Vikings opened their 3A District 6 schedule on the road at Trinity Academy in Wichita on Friday night.  After being shutout in the first half, they battled in the second, but ultimately fell 36-16 to the Knights.  The full story is here: Vikings Come Up Short in District Opener.  Smoky Valley has their second home game of the season this Friday night against Hesston in district action.

VOLLEYBALL

It was a bit of a slow week for Smoky Valley volleyball ahead a very busy week upcoming.  On Tuesday, September 23, the Vikings traveled to Larned for a Central Kansas League triangular.  They won over Larned in three sets 25-10, 18-25, 25-10 but fell to Hesston in two 25-16, 25-14.  With the 1-1 finish, Smoky Valley is now 9-11 on the season heading into this week.

Smoky Valley has three competition dates this week.  They will host a CKL triangular with Hoisington and Halstead on Tuesday (9/30) and also welcome Nickerson and Chapman for a triangular on Thursday (10/1).  The week concludes at the Belle Plaine Tournament on Saturday (10/3).

CROSS COUNTRY

The Viking runners were slated to compete at the Southeast of Saline Invitational last Tuesday, September 23, but mother nature had other plans as wet conditions forced the cancellation of the meet.  It will not be rescheduled.  Next up will be the Halstead Invitational this Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

GIRLS TENNIS

The Smoky Valley tennis team traveled to Hesston on Wednesday, September 24, taking fifth place as a team.  In #1 Singles, Kaitlyn Leis went 2-1 on the day with a second place finish, picking up 8-6 wins in the first two rounds before falling to Ellsworth’s Karlie Haase in the championship match.  In doubles, Noelle Crouch and Layla Fleming won their opening match 8-1 over Colby and Freeman of Valley Center.  On the front side of the bracket in the #2 division, they finished fourth place at 1-2.  Addison Rojas and Zora Carver went 1-2 in #1 Doubles with a sixth place finish.  Kiera Showalter also competed and finished eighth in #2 Singles.

The Vikings are back on the court this week as they finish their regular season with their home September Slam on Tuesday (9/30) and will be at the CKL meet in Pratt on Saturday (10/4) at 9:00 a.m.
