Dragon’s Volleyball Finish Classic with Dominant Victory

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team closed out the 2025 Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic with a record-setting sweep of the Southwestern College JV on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons rolled to a 25-6, 25-6, 25-5 victory to finish 1-3 in the Classic and earn their first home win of the season.

Hutchinson is now 10-11 heading into a Monday KJCCC match at Dodge City.

Some of the milestone and Top 10 single-match statistics established on Saturday were:

+ The 17 total points allowed were the fewest allowed in the rally-score era, which dates back to 2001. That beat the old record of 29 points allowed against Cloud County in 2008.

+ The five points allowed in the third set tied the program single-set record. The Dragons allowed only five points to Dodge City in a set in 2021.

+ The Blue Dragons had 21 services aces, which is the second most in Blue Dragons single-match history.

+ Freshman Clara Oliveira had 12 service aces by herself, which tied Hall of Famer Mariana Blue for the second most in single-match history. Blum had 12 aces – all 12 were consecutive in one service appearance – in the 2004 NJCAA Tournament against Northwest-Shoals.

+ The Blue Dragons hit .569 for the match, which was the second-highest hitting percentage in program single-match history.

Blue Dragon middle blockers Kierny Follmer and Mattie Galliher led the Blue Dragons with a combined 22 kills.

Follmer had career highs of 11 kills on 18 attacks for a .611 hitting percentage. Galliher had 11 kills and hit .500 on 18 attacks to go with two blocks.

The Dragons had 42 kills on 65 attacks with only five attack errors. Southwestern hit a negative-137 with three kills on 51 attacks.

Alondra Villanueva had eight kills, Lauren Vazquez had seven kills and Jaylynn McNeill had five kills.

Setter Angela Reupena had 32 assists with four digs and three aces. Oliveira had a team-high 10 digs.

SET 1: The Dragons opened their dominant win with a 6-0 run. The lead grew to 10-1 on a Vazquez kills. Leading 16-6, the Blue Dragons went on a 9-0 run to close the set McNeill and Vazquez had two kills each and Oliveira had four aces, including three in a row and a fourth on set point for a 25-6 win. The Dragons hit .500 in the set with seven aces.

SET 2: The Blue Dragons had 14 kills on 20 attacks in the second season for a season single-set high .650 attack percentage. Back-to-back Vazquez aces opened a 10-1 lead. Reupena’s back-to-back aces upped the Dragon lead to 20-3. Oliveira had the Dragons seventh ace of the set on set point for a 25-6 win and a 2-0 match lead.

SET 3: The third set was much more of the same for the Blue Dragons. Hutchinson hit .588 on 11 kills and had eight service aces. The Dragons had leads of 5-0, 11-2 and 14-5 before running the final 11 points of the match on an Oliveira service run. Oliveira had four-straight aces to build an 18-5 lead. She added three more in the final run and a kill by McNeill closed the match out for a 25-5 win.
