LINDSBORG, Kan. – It was another busy week for Smoky Valley varsity sports. Hope Willems continues to standout for Viking cross country while the volleyball, girls tennis and football teams also competed against tough competition.
FOOTBALL
The Vikings started the season 2-0 with wins over Larned (8-6) and Belle Plaine (48-18) but in their final tune-up before district play starts, they fell to Haven 48-6 on Friday night. Read the full story here: Haven Starts Fast in 38-6 Win Over Smoky Valley
VOLLEYBALL
Smoky Valley started the week with a split against Ellinwood and Sterling in a home triangular last Monday. Ellinwood, which is ranked #1 in the most recent Kansas Volleyball Association rankings in Class 2A, beat the Vikings 25-11, 25-12, while Smoky Valley beat Sterling 25-18, 25-15. The Vikings then headed to Pratt on Tuesday, September 16 where they went 1-1, falling to Pratt 25-23, 25-10 and beating Nickerson 25-20, 23-25, 25-23.
This week, Smoky Valley has another CKL Triangular as they will be on the road at Larned facing the Indians and Hesston on Tuesday, September 23.
CROSS COUNTRY
Smoky Valley cross country headed northeast to compete in the Clay Center Invitational on Thursday, September 18. Hope Willems continued her great season with a fifth-place finish, running the 5000 meters in 20:59.25. Three others were in the top 25 including Sophia Eyer (21st), Emma Chaput (23rd) and Ella Chaput (24th). On the boys side, Kaden Bishop was the top finisher for the Vikings with a time of 18:24.40 in 14th place.
Next up for Viking cross country is the Southeast of Saline Invitational on Tuesday, September 23.
GIRLS TENNIS
The Viking girls tennis team competed at the Ellsworth September Slam on Thursday, September 18. In #1 Singles, Kaitlyn Leis finished in 6th Place with one win on the day, while Noelle Crouch picked up two wins for the day and finished 5th in #2 Singles. Addison Rojas and Zora Carver picked up one win on the day in #1 Doubles, as did Gabi Ayala and Kiera Showalter in #2 Doubles.
Smoky Valley has one varsity event this week on the courts as they will be in Hesston on Tuesday, September 23 starting at 3:00 p.m.
