Lindsborg, Kan. – The Bethany College Swedes Men’s Soccer team battled back to earn a 2–1 victory over the Sterling College Warriors on Wednesday evening at Coach Ted Kessinger Family Stadium, securing their first home win of the season.
The opening half was a tightly contested battle, with Sterling controlling much of the possession early on. The Warriors created better chances in the first 30 minutes, but goalkeeper Gunvald Andresen kept the Swedes in the match with several key saves. Sterling eventually broke through in the 32nd minute when a long-range strike found the back of the net after a series of deflections in the box.
Bethany responded quickly, refusing to let the momentum slip away. In the 38th minute, after a series of fouls by Sterling, forward Mordecai Masakwa was brought down inside the box, earning a penalty for the Swedes. Senior captain Steven McQueen calmly stepped up and converted from the spot to level the match heading into halftime.
The second half saw a shift in control, with Bethany taking charge of the game and creating multiple chances in attack. Their persistence was rewarded in the 56th minute when freshman Baptista Amofa capitalized on a loose ball in the box, firing a left-footed shot past the keeper to give the Swedes a 2–1 lead.
Despite several more opportunities to extend the lead, Bethany was unable to find a third goal, but the defense stood firm to close out the match and secure all three points.
This win marks the first time since 2021 that both the Bethany men’s and women’s soccer programs have won on the same day, a sign of the positive momentum building within the program.
