COFFEYVILLE – Seven different players scored goals as the No. 12-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team posted its largest margin of victory over the Coffeyville Red Ravens since 2010 on Saturday.
Freshman Poppy Smith‘s five-point game led the Blue Dragons to an 8-0 victory over Coffeyville at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The game was stopped with 14:46 to play in the second half on the KJCCC’s new mercy rule.
The Blue Dragons improve to 4-1 overall and earned their first KJCCC win over the season, improving to 1-1. Next up for the Dragons is a home game against Dodge City at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Coffeyville is now 1-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the KJCCC.
Smith had her second multi-goal game of the season and had a season-high five points with two goals and an assist. She also recorded her second game-winning goal of the season.
Isabell Van Fleet, Olivia Tamaki and Isabela Puccinelli all had goals and assists for three-point games. Freshman Bessie Simpson had two assists.
Sophomore Hannah Lowe, sophomore Sofia Bremmer and freshman Ava McAninch all scored their first career goals.
The Blue Dragons outshot Coffeyville 20-2. Hutchinson held the Red Ravens without single shot on goal as freshman goalkeeper Rylee Loague (2-0) posted her second shutout of the season.
The Dragons took command in the first have with six goals, marking the first time since September 2, 2023 that Hutchinson scored five or more goals in a half.
Smith scored just 55 seconds into the game when she took a Tamaki feed for her fourth goal of the season. The Dragons made it 2-0 just 3:29 into the game when Lowe scored from a Van Fleet assist.
Simpson had her first assist of the game on Hutchinson’s third goal when she fed Bremmer for a goal in the 12th minute. Tamaki scored her third of the season from a Beatriz Carvalho assist in the 36th minute for a 4-0 Hutchinson lead.
Van Fleet scored her second goal of the season from a Smith assist for a 5-0 lead in the 39th minute from a Smith assist. Simpson got her second assist of the game, feeding McAninch for her first of the year, giving the Blue Dragons a 6-0 lead in the 39th minute.
Puccinelli scored three points in the second half. First, she fed Smith for her second of the game and fifth of the season for a 7-0 lead in the 75th minute. Puccinelli then scored from a Maria Azevedo assist with 14:46 to play to end the game.
GAME NOTES – This was the second time this season and 52nd time in program history the Blue Dragons held an opponent to no shots on a goal. … The Dragons are now 20-5 all-time against Coffeyville, which includes six victories in a row. … The last three Hutchinson wins over Coffeyville have been by shutout. … The Dragons posted their 192nd all-time shutout, the 14th against Coffeyville.
