Lawrence, Kan. – Bethany College was on the road, taking on the Haskell Indian Nations University Fighting Indians, Saturday, September 13th. The Swedes came into the match hot off their home opener sweep against Calvary, looking to add to their win column. This would become another clean sweep for the Swedes after almost dropping the second set to Haskell.
First set of the match, Bethany started off strong with a quick three-point lead over Haskell but still within reach. The Fighting Indians held on throughout the set but Bethany was breaking away around their 16-point mark. From there the Swedes ran away with the first set, 25-19, and as a team were hitting .359. The second set kicked off in similar fashion as to the first with the score going back and forth and neither team able to string more than a couple of points together at a time. It wasn’t until late into the set did the Swedes find their momentum and build their lead which solidified the win. The score of the second set was 25-20 with Bethany hitting a .286. As the third set began, the Swedes took control early and gave themselves a quick lead over Haskell. But the Fighting Indians didn’t go quietly, as they attempted to make a late run to force an additional set. Unfortunately, Haskell struggled to slow down Bethany who continued to stay aggressive and take advantage of any and all mistakes made by the Fighting Indians. The final score was 25-17 with the Swedes hitting a .293 and a .311 overall.
Notable Stats from this game include 6 kills and hitting a .500 was Antonette Carochi, earning her third triple-double of the season with 12 kills, 18 assists and 19 digs was Ashlynn Gehring, and 21 digs by Michelle Acevedo Ortiz.
