Former Blue Dragon Basketball Player & Buhler Coach Ryan Swanson Dies at 56

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Ryan Swanson, a former national champion basketball player at Hutchinson Community College and former coach at Hutch CC and Buhler High School, died Saturday, Aug. 2 at Hospice House at the age of 56.

Swanson graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1987 before attending Hutchinson Community College. While at Hutchison CC, he helped the Blue Dragons Men’s Basketball team win the NJCAA National Championship in 1988. He moved on to attend Kansas State University, graduating in 1991.

He began his coaching career after graduating from K-State, coaching at colleges including Kentucky, Iowa, Wisconsin, and at the local level like Garden City. He was the coach at Hutchinson Community College from 2006-09 and Buhler High School from 2015-22. Swanson also owned Phoenix Restoration and Phoenix Roofing alongside his wife, Robin.

Swanson’s Celebration of Life will be Friday, Aug. 8 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena at 10:00 a.m. His family requests to those attending the service to wear attire for teams he coached for or for his favorite teams, the K-State Wildcats or Kansas City Chiefs. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Ryan Swanson Memorial Fund, which will be given to organizations Ryan had a passion for.
