Halstead Coaches, Blue Dragon Athletes Awarded at Wichita Sports Banquet

WICHITA, Kan. – Two Hutchinson Community College athletes were named the Junior College Athletes of the Year and a husband & wife duo of coaches at Halstead High School earned a special recognition at the 2025 Greater Wichita Sports Banquet, held by the Wichita Sports Commission.

Star Blue Dragon Women’s Basketball player Hailey Jackson was honored as the Junior College Female Athlete of the Year. The Tulsa, Okla. native average 18.3 PPG and 8.6 RPG in her sophomore season at Hutchinson Community College, earning First-Team All-American honors. Jackson won the honor over Cowley College’s Laura Bonomi and Butler CC’s Ashley Singhateh.

Blue Dragon Football star Waymond Jordan Jr. was named the Junior College Male Athlete of the Year. Jordan helped take the Blue Dragons to a national championship in 2024 and was named the NJCAA DI Football Offensive Player of the Year. The Pensacola, Fla. native averaged 134.5 rushing yards/game in 2024. He will take his talents to Los Angeles to play for the USC Trojans. Jordan won over Butler’s Seven Cloud and Cowley’s Evan Rodriguez.

Two Halstead High School head coaches also earned a special recognition. Husband and wife duo Derek and Diana Schutte were given the Dynamic Duo award after Derek led the Halstead Dragons’ girls basketball team and Diana led the school’s volleyball team to their first state titles in school history.

  • Junior College Male Athlete of the Year: Waymond Jordan Jr. (Hutchinson CC)
  • College Female Athlete of the Year: Sara Duque Jimenez (Wichita State)
  • College Male Athlete of the Year: Xavier Bell (Wichita State)
  • High School Girls Coach of the Year: Greg Rauch (Bishop Carroll)
  • High School Boys Coach of the Year: Derek Tuttle (Andover Central)
  • Gene Stephenson Coach of the Year: Steven Gream (Cowley College)
  • Professional Athlete of the Year: Zebby Matthews (Wichita Wind Surge)
  • Robert E. “Bob” Hanson Impact Award: Clark Ensz (Founder of of Prairie Fire Marathon)
  • Achievement of Excellence Award: Todd Carter (Butler CC)
  • Special Recognition Award “Dynamic Duo”: Derek & Diana Schutte (Halstead High School)
  • Buster Posey National College Catcher of the Year: Caden Bodine (Coastal Carolina)
