STERLING, Kan. – Sterling College Tennis faced Bethel College in their conference opener on Tuesday, March 18 losing 7-0 to the No. 19 ranked team.
The day started with Bethel claiming the doubles point with a 3-0 sweep. Fernando Vargas and Kazuki Fukushima teamed up to take on Peter Kollar and Zade Zihar in the No. 1 doubles match losing 6-2. In No. 2 doubles play, Rubem Bogomoltz and Pedro Felipoff took a 6-3 loss against Billy Hoada and Jorge Batista. Cassidy Kelly and Adam King went 6-0 to lose the No. 3 singles match to Jonah Bergeron and Adam Tomka.
Sterling continued to battle in singles play with Felipoff almost getting the upset on Batista in No. 1 singles play, winning the first match 6-2, losing the second 7-6 and losing the tie breaker 10-8. In the No. 2 singles match, Vargas took on Kollar losing 6-2, 6-3.
King and Bogomoltz both proved challenging opponents in the No. 3 and 4 singles matches, respectively. King took on Hoada and lost 7-5, 6-3 while Bogomoltz went 7-5, 6-2 against Rodrigo Sanchez for the loss.
Fukushima faced Zihar in No. 5 singles play where he fell 6-2, 6-4 and Ibrahim Curtis-Kaduma lost 6-0, 6-0 to Tomka in the No. 6 singles match.
Sterling (1-4) will take on (RV) Texas A&M – Texarkana (16-3) in a nonconference match up in Texarkana, Texas on Thursday, March 19.
