STERLING, Kan. — Tabor College defeated the Sterling College Warriors 2-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Sterling’s goalkeeper, Cassidy Kelly, recorded 10 saves, including seven in the first half, but the home team could not find the net. The Bluejays capitalized on their opportunities in the second half, scoring both goals to secure the win.
The first half began with both teams establishing their presence on the field. Sterling’s defensive line, led by Kelly, made crucial saves against multiple attempts from Tabor College, including shots from Martin Marinakis and Pol Fernandez. Sterling’s Jonathan Torres had a significant opportunity with a shot in the 12th minute, which went high, and another that was blocked later in the half.
Despite the Bluejays’ persistent offensive pressure, Sterling’s defense held firm, with Kelly making multiple saves to keep the score level. The first half concluded without either team breaking the deadlock, leaving the score tied at 0-0.
The second half began with Sterling fending off early pressure from Tabor, including a blocked shot in the 45th minute. Despite a solid defensive start, Tabor broke through in the 54th minute when Pedro Buccini scored the opening goal, assisted by Pol Fernandez.
Sterling responded with two corner kicks by Daniel Stone, but Tabor’s defense held firm. Kelly made significant contributions with saves in the 57th and 60th minutes. However, Tabor College extended their lead in the 70th minute with a goal by Richard Wiegand, assisted by Henrique Buccini.
Sterling pushed forward with attempts by Chimela Orji and Torres, but the shots went wide. Despite the efforts, the game ended with Sterling trailing 2-0.
Kelly recorded 10 saves, facing 12 shots on goal, maintaining a strong presence in the net. Torres took the offensive lead with three shots. Orji contributed defensively and managed two shots, with one on goal. Medupe Sithole added one shot during the match, showcasing his midfield involvement.
The Warriors move to 4-10-1 on the season, 2-9 in conference. They will travel to Leavenworth, Kan. on Saturday, Oct. 25 to take on the University of Saint Mary (6-7-2, 4-5-1) at 3:30 p.m.
