HESSTON, Kan. — Sterling College edged past Hesston College with a 90-85 victory on the road on Saturday, Nov. 29. Sterling capitalized on free throws, converting 30-of-40 attempts, to secure the win.
The Warriors opened the first half by establishing an early lead with a strong offensive performance. Joseph Oparaeke scored the initial points with a jumper and converted a free throw to keep the game tied at the start. As the half progressed, Sterling capitalized on turnovers, with Jaivion Reed and Ziri Blackwood each contributing steals that led to scoring opportunities.
Midway through the half, Sterling’s Cedric Wilson and Chris Drake helped extend the lead with key baskets. Julian Smith added to the score with a layup, and Amiri Ndayisaba connected on a crucial 3-pointer. By the closing minutes, Sterling increased their advantage, with Blackwood hitting another 3-pointer to secure a 10-point lead. The half ended with Sterling leading 43–35, maintaining momentum into the break.
Sterling’s second half was marked by a strong performance, particularly from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. The team opened the half with a quick scoring exchange but soon pulled ahead with a 3-pointer by Amiri at 18:33. Chris Drake‘s defensive efforts, including a steal at 17:59, helped maintain momentum. Midway through the half, the Warriors extended their lead through key contributions from Blackwood and Smith, with Smith connecting on a jumper at 12:46 and Blackwood sinking a 3-pointer at 12:00 to widen the gap. Despite the Larks’ attempts to close the deficit, Sterling held a significant lead, highlighted by a layup from Oparaeke at 13:36 and consistent free-throw shooting.
As the half progressed, Sterling withstood a late push from the Larks, who capitalized on their full court pressure and forced the Warriors into turnovers. However, the Warriors kept their composure, sank free throws and finished the game with a 90-85 advantage.
Blackwood scored 18 points, hitting three 3-pointers and recording two steals for Sterling. Drake contributed with 10 points, making five of six field goal attempts and collecting eight rebounds. Smith added 16 points, connecting on five field goals and pulling down four rebounds. Reed tallied eight points, successfully converting six of seven free throws and notching two steals.
With the win the Warriors move to 6-3 overall, 3-0 in conference. Sterling will restart conference play on Wednesday, Dec. 3 in Sterling against Kansas Wesleyan University (3-5, 1-2).
